THE DABBAWALA

THE DISCIPLINED ORGANIZERS

The dabbawalas of MUMBAI constitute a service of lunchbox delievery and return system that delievers hot lunches from home and restaurants to the people of any sector at work. They travel through bicycle, autos, local train or any other means. There main motive is to deliever the lunch box by the time by hook or by crook.

In 1890 Mumbai, MAHADEO HAVAJI BACHCHE  started a lunch delievery service with about a 100 men.

Each Dabbawala, regardless of role, is paid around 8,000 rupees per month. Between 175,000 and 200,000 lunch boxes are distributed each day by 4,500 to 5,000 dabbawalas. Dabbawalas are self-employed. The union initiation fee is 30,000 rupees, which guarantees a 5,000-rupee monthly income to a distributer and a job for life. The 150 rupee a month fee provides for delivery of six days a week.
